Our History

Serenity House Hospice's Mission Statement is:

"Providing supportive services, education and links to
community partnerships, empowering families through
life threatening illness."

Our dedicated staff and volunteers are trainied
in the concept of Hospice Palliative Care
to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual
needs of those whom we are privileged to serve.

The idea for Serenity was developed by a group of friends who saw first hand the need for quality hospice palliative care in Elgin County. These friends felt compelled to do something about this, so a mission of information gathering and growing the dream began. Other hospice organizations were visited to find out how they grew their hospice services and what would be needed for Elgin County. Like minded individuals in the community who were passionate about the cause soon joined together to form a Board of Directors for Serenity House Hospice.

Incorporation status was received on November 29, 2002 and the organization has since operated under Charitable Registration Number 86460 3352 RR0001. Since inception, Serenity House Hospice has been committed to building support and awareness in order to engage our community with our organization.

In the fall of 2003, Serenity House Hospice undertook a Needs and Feasibility Study in Elgin County to find out about what the residents of the county felt about hospice palliative care. A third party through the Statistics Laboratory at the University of Western Ontario did the study.

Out of the residents surveyed, they found:

  • 91% agreed that hospice services would be effective in meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of a patient
  • 93% agreed that a hospice should be integrated to complement and support existing services

Along with much more information that supported the need for hospice palliative care in Elgin. In 2006 we opened the doors to our resource center with funds from The Ontario Trillium Foundation and have been offering programs, support and information ever since.
